Unfaithful is a story about two families, intertwined, passionate, and getting by, as they navigate the messiness that comes with a life on Earth. Infidelity, aging, death, drama, this novel is chock-full of the twists and turns of reality.
I love the different ways in which the title makes itself known throughout this novel, showing us that unfaithfulness is about more than just infidelity. The authors discuss a number of important themes with great clarity. Aging is done particularly well, always running like a clock in the background, and the characters’ grief hits hard.
The novel is a reminder to love the ones who are here while they’re here, to juggle grief with guilt if you have it and keep moving forward. I also really like the honesty surrounding the grief here. The characters don’t try to teach us anything they don’t know about death, even the parents. Uncle Frank, a priest, could be the character that shines most in Unfaithful. He’s always there to help the families, but more than anything, he’s a constant clear and calming presence with more up his sleeve than you might think.
Authors Michael Catherine Merrill and Gene Piotrowsky do a great job of shining a light on the messiness of family in Unfaithful. It’s got the foundation of a book that could really break open the truths of family life
